JONES PASS, CO

JANUARY 2018

As we all know, this has been a low snow, high consequence season. Rated the worst in 60 years for the NW. I've based myself out of UT for the season, and the reality is that it was the middle of January and it hadn't snowed. Everyone kept saying to me "Kelli, it will come" all through December. So when it was forecasted to snow over a foot in Colorado, my home stomping grounds, I took advantage of it. I flew into Denver excited to see snow. What I saw instead was dry landscapes that hadn't had snow on it yet this year. The foothills in the distance were barren, with only a few inches of snow even on the summits. I couldn't believe my eyes!

Pulling my ski bag off the belt felt like a blow. Why had I dragged this stuff around? Clearly there wasn't going to be skiing. So, I met up with my family and enjoyed the summer weather in the middle of January. We went hiking, climbing and had a lot of beer. As my trip dates were coming to a close, the forecast called for snow that evening. I kept my hopes down, and just went to bed. I was surprised to wake up to news of the mountains getting over a foot of fresh pow. My dad and I packed the car with our BC gear and                         and we booked it to Jones Pass. We skied back into the pass and the powder and snow was incredible. It was one of the best powder days of the year!

Thankful for CO, to visit my old hometown and get some good, low consequence runs in this year. Check it out:
